N O T J U S T N U M B E R S : American military casualites

not just numbers project

“Not by lamentations and mournful chants ought we to celebrate the funeral of a good man [woman], but by hymns;  for, one ceasing to be numbered with mortals,  enters upon the heritage of a diviner life.

Since they are gone where they feel no pain, let us not indulge in too much grief. The soul is incapable of death. And they, like a bird not long enough in its cage to become attached to it, are free to fly away to a purer air....

Since we cherish a trust like this, let our outward actions be in accord with it, and let us keep our hearts pure and our minds calm.”   -  Plutarch

These photographs are grouped in solemn rows without statistics
to show the extent of our military losses (in Iraq) in one view.

We do not have photos of every American killed and sadly, more will be added.

We do not know, nor can we show, the number of wounded and disabled men and women who fought in this war – those who continue to fight their battles today.
We do not forget the journalists who have been killed covering the news.

This grouping is current as of  September 7, 2006
from resources  current to August 27, 2006

memorial day poem, 2005

I no longer show statistics of the numbers wounded or killed.
The page speaks for itself. PLEASE REMEMBER that these are only the casualties whose family member provided Military City with a photo. Hundreds are not shown here.

The NOT JUST NUMBERS project began out of urgency to show the immediate impact
of the war on Iraq. It is a one-woman project.
Some months I feel I cannot continue to add these rows,
spend the hours of work finishing the photos to get better quality
or add more names and ages and home towns to the “NAMES” page.

Then I remember  The Mother’s War
I remember that we have no choices in these matters. That what we do now will impact
hundreds and thousands of family members and indiviudals who will live
with the truth of this time for the rest of their lives, and for generation to come.

May we remain balanced in our journey toward peace,
and remember that we are not alone on this path.

Please make sure to visit the page called "rows" where you will see names, ages,
and home towns of those Americans who have been killed by these wars.

August 7, 2006: webweaver's note:

I recall a young man interviewed shortly after Preident Bush appeaared in his infamous "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" photo op. The young man was asked if he was afraid to go to Iraq. He told the reporter that he didn't think he would have to go... because his president had already told the world that the mission had been accomplished.

I did not expect to be working on this in the year 2006. Was I a fool not to see the strength of power and words, missions and war? We now hear stirring of hostility toward Iran. How long will this continue? How long must we weep? My tears are for the families, the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan ...  and for the new troops, who feel sure that they will "be out of combat soon" because their president told them that the Mission had been Accomplished.

I bow my head in sadness for all of  humanity. May we find compassion and peace.

Thank you for your patience with this project. It has taken hundred of hours to complete, and more tears that I can tell.

Please assist with costs by donating to duckdaotsu.

or write to me at "duckdaotsu media arts" to send checks or money orders. Any amount would make a huge difference in the upkeep of this web site.

We receive approximately 250,000 hits per month... and all of our donors -- much like the
American public -- have become overwhelmed by this struggle.  Thank you.
